Analysis of the severity of Covid-19 in children

14 children (up to 17 years old) were admitted to intensive care units (ICU) with Covid-19 in Portugal. The vast majority (11) belonged to risk groups for severe Covid-19, including the only fatality. 60 children were admitted with MIS-C (Multisystemic Inflammatory Syndrome), with no fatalities.

In paediatrics, between March 2020 and 7 December 2021, only one chronic patient died with Covid-19 in Portugal. Fourteen children were admitted to ICU, only three were not in severe risk for the disease.

The number of children admitted to ICU with MIS-C, a Kawasaki syndrome family condition temporally associated with Covid-19, was 60. No deaths were recorded in this group.

Other patients with positive PCR test for SARS-CoV-2 were also admitted, but for other causes, not related to Covid-19.
