Italy enters state of emergency again, this time unrelated to Covid-19

The Council of Ministers met on 28th February 2022 at Palazzo Chigi. According to the Italian press , this state of emergency declared during the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia has nothing to do with the state of emergency for the Covid-19 pandemic that exists in Italy and which expires on March 31st, 2022.

As reported by Informazione.it, energy is the main reason for this state of emergency until December 31st, but the unpredictable risk level in the normal functioning of the national natural gas system is also a big factor in this decision.

In addition, it is stipulated that Ukrainian citizens are accommodated in migrant reception centers. Therefore, for preventive purposes, the advance of the adoption of measures to increase the supply and/or reduce the demand for gas foreseen in emergency cases is authorized.

This new state of emergency will be in force until December 31st, 2022. At the same time, a specific decree was approved by the Council of Ministers for the “need to ensure relief and assistance to the Ukrainian population in national territory as a result of the serious international crisis in progress”.

Mario Draghi, Prime Minister of Italy, thanked the Chamber “for the depth and breadth of its interventions, for the awareness of the painful decision that will be taken today but also for the compactness of the condemnation of the horror”.
